It turns out the the majority of the inner can is Titanium........we cannot weld stainless to titanium....one has a diaganal crystal the othe is horizontal or something........anyway it keeps cracking on the tack welds so can not be welded as is!!! Chris now has a plan to machine two huge inner stainless end caps that will replace the Titanium ones, this can then be welded to the tee piece and then they can be re bolted/riveted to the main body of the can. This is a total disaster as my Thunderbird silencer is falling to pieces after a year again!! So i will have to try to wrap some steel around the old silencer and mig it again............? What a shame, was so looking forward to hearing the sound!!! All good things come to those who wait!!!
aargh!! the wonderful web says...
ReplyDeleteTitanium and Titanium alloys cannot be fusion welded to Stainless Steel. However special solid state processes that do not resort to fusion, can be used to join the two materials for preparing Transition Elements.
Among these processes are friction welding, explosive welding, ultrasonic welding, magnetic pulse welding, coextrusion or roll welding and other methods.
Regular fusion welding processes can then be used to weld each end of the transition element to the part of the same material needed to accomplish the required assembly.
SOUNDS EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!
Other thing you could try is making a heavy duty custom steel can like that one we saw at Bob's on the VW Caddy, he'd made it out of scaffold pole / steel drain pipe or something...
ReplyDeleteits alright!!! Chris has had two new end caps manufactured to engineering standards in stainless steel so can be welded and bolted again!!!Wicked
