Final Removals Before Sandblast?
Started by cutting away the outer lower valance to highlight the state of the inner.
Bothe lower posts and valance corners are gone.
These are the reinforced chassis mounting points, both look the same.
So off with the lower front clip and lower A posts.
I have discovered what is either an original left over piece of the front clip (there is crash damage to inner cab floor) or a dodgy patch plate....wobbly at the edges but secured in the center?? Was there a plate that sits on the front of the inner valance that drops down to sandwich in between the outer upper and lower panels? Cause that's how it was at removal.
Detail showing the last bits of the inner lower valance and this strange section from the underside looking forward..
Not so much left now but at last some shiny steel of the chassis front edge. Repare panels from Autocraft come with new chassis brackets.
Looking up into the A posts.....still need to be cut back to the cab floor,.
Entropeas great pile of junk!!!! But I am now thinking about the rear cargo floor!!!!
P.s. VW heritages ebay store has some split side panels that have dents that could be purfect!!

VW Split Screen Front Wheel Arch Removal
A lot of progress here some serious cutting going on with both front wheel arches out revealing some serious
internal rebuilding required. Side sills being unpicked and inner sills and pretty good but are rusted out in places. Inner door plate on the cargo sill is shot.
A post isn't there.
A post also shot.

Another wheel arch unpicked and side outer sill started. Inner sill looks good although the outrigger and the bottom of the b-pillar not looking great. Hey Ho now for further investigation on the front inner valance and more rust removal.

VW Type 2 Ball Joint Removal
I had started to notice a knocking at the front end especially over heavy bumps, then she developed a really bad squeaking sound also, so i decided that it was time to check the front beam ball joints.
So with the use of my brothers fantastic facilities I started work on the removal.
The first video shows the excessive play in the worst ball joint - this amount of play is notice able by just slowly jacking the wheel up using a lever bar or a jack. Dangerous and impossible to set your tracking, alignment or steering box in this state.
The second video shows the 8 to 12 tons of pressure required to force them out. Best quality ball joints used to replace the old ones pressed back home using the same press.
So with the right friends, the right tools and the right parts all this was done in around 3 hours.
So good to see the belly on the ramps its just a shame I did not do this when she was immaculately clean a true OCD VW moment.

How To Remove A VW Split Screen Steering Box
Start by removing the horn button, remove steering bolt, drive the wheel of then remove the spring and wood ruff key and indicator housing, release the knee mount bolts. Go back under and remove drag link and all bolts on the steering box itself then lift front of bus and remove whilst driving off the rubber and lower mount in cab.
It would be easy to make it RHD at this satge.
Just look at the state of this steering box - its been leaking oil for some time I think.
So just the lower brake and clutch pedals to go now. Center of cab floor is solid.
Found more tin worm around the drivers chassis to valance mount.
Need to remove the heating insulation - does this stuff contain anything nasty???
Did a little panel beating up front but am struggling to reach the very lower nose. Its time to contact Danny to arrange for sandblasting but I should also cut away some of the rot to allow for deeper inner cleaning.
