VW Type 2 Ball Joint Removal

I had started to notice a knocking at the front end especially over heavy bumps, then she developed a really bad squeaking sound also, so i decided that it was time to check the front beam ball joints.
So with the use of my brothers fantastic facilities I started work on the removal.

The first video shows the excessive play in the worst ball joint - this amount of play is notice able by just slowly jacking the wheel up using a lever bar or a jack. Dangerous and impossible to set your tracking, alignment or steering box in this state.
The second video shows the 8 to 12 tons of pressure required to force them out. Best quality ball joints used to replace the old ones pressed back home using the same press.

So with the right friends, the right tools and the right parts all this was done in around 3 hours.
So good to see the belly on the ramps its just a shame I did not do this when she was immaculately clean  a true OCD VW moment.

VW Camper Van Electrics

 So no matter how many labels you put on your wiring, by removing the  whole loom inevitably some labels are lost!! So I begin the long road to trouble shooting the loom. Also an old starter is not helping out much as this is also playing up and being intermittent. Maybe a new starter is in order, but I am hoping with a fresh charged battery and a fresh soldered joint on the new main battery live starter connection, these issues will disappear, for now at least!

So I currently ;) have wipers, hazard warning lights, parking lights, rear lights and  live feeds to the starter, fuel pump and the coil. Loads of issues with the dash as no lights other than the main beam warning lights are on, I obviously have connected up a permanent live the the front light circuit. The only one that should be permanent is the main beam circuit? as in that you should be able to flick the main beam switch and always get a flash from the front lights, even with the ignition off??

How To Re Fit A VW Engine

  1955cc Engine rebuilt and ready to fit.

 Drive shafts all fitted and locked down.

  Nice and clean.

  Started to refit the twin R1s.

  New paint for the dash started fitting up electrics.....slow work.

 New oil lines made up and fitted.

New door seals all, just need the bumpers and wheeler wheels painting now....white, green or black???

VW Campervan Rebuild

 Massive thanks to Gary, Rob and Neil for their help this weekend!! Loads of major stages completed, heavy gauge running gear completed!

 Even some finer touches like templated and doubled up the original heating insulation coupled with modern silver bubble insulation. I plan to feed a propex gas heater in here feeding the original  front and center heater pipes, so very important to insulate.

 Front clip and under front head lining all covered in silver insulation.

 Stainless bolts securing fully removable side and center belly pans.

 Loads a cables and gear box mount adapted and replaced, so all rear built up.

 Neil and Rob were busy with the old wet n dry polishing for ever!! Thanks again.

I can start to think about glass and seals, engine and electrics and very soon an MOT!!!!

VW Barn Find

Finally on her wheels and out of the shed....Its been a long time since sunlight!!

 Sunshine!! And Feet!!

 Flattish now, still needing attention in areas.

 1200, 1500, 2000 grade.

 Starting to see the results but with a couple of dreaded cut throughs.

 An Empty shed.....almost!!!!

This will not mate to the standard type 2 torsion tube??? There must be a missing rubber mount???
What is this gearbox mount??? It came with this 091 gearbox.....It a :

CP 45 128 VW Heritage searches = For use in a van running a CP code gearbox with a 2.0 Type 4 engine.
Is the torsion mount different on a type 4 late bay to an 1975 1600 bay??
Or is this a Type 25 of a Variant Notch Back?? Answers please.....Darren!!!

Rebuild Started

 With  new acoustic sound deadening fitted above the engine bay.

 Need to get a front beam ball joint replaced so only one front side  fitted up completely.

 A large amount of the electrics in and partially connected up so far so good.

 Team work. Failed delivery from JK....their poor effort held us up loads!!

VW Camper Unwrapped

 Hello!!

 It was like that Christmas feeling when your a kid, unwrapping it!!

 mmmmmmm.

 Fitted some side belly pans with the new stainless steel bolt on style.

Could not resist fitting the new Westy window as its just a push fit. So far I am one very happy bunny and I feel that she will ready start to speed up as a project.
