How To Remove A VW Split Screen Steering Box

Start by removing the horn button, remove steering bolt, drive the wheel of then remove the spring and wood ruff key and indicator housing,  release the knee mount bolts. Go back under and remove drag link and all bolts on the steering box itself then lift front of bus and remove whilst driving off the rubber and lower mount in cab.

 It would be easy to make it RHD at this satge.

 Just look at the state of this steering box - its been leaking oil for some time I think.

 So just the lower brake and clutch pedals to go now. Center of cab floor is solid.

 Found more tin worm around the drivers chassis to valance mount.

 Need to remove the heating insulation - does this stuff contain anything nasty???

Did a little panel beating up front but am struggling to reach the very lower nose. Its time to contact Danny to arrange for sandblasting but I should also cut away some of the rot to allow for deeper inner cleaning.

WOW, I must admit it looks and sounds fantastic that the Hanover Plant is back to restoring originals, lets just hope they don't start producing Panzer Tanks again!(In 1938 the plant was swiftly adapted to military production, building 51,000 army 'bucket cars' as well as 15,000 amphibious vehicles, tank parts, bomb cases and mines. From 1943 onwards Volkswagen also produced the V-1 flying bomb - the pilot-less aircraft which caused havoc in London towards the end of the war) It would be so nice to get this done and receive a brand new VW warranty!!

VW Split Swing Axle and Reduction Box Removal

 How to remove a swing axle gearbox with reduction boxes???? First remove the castle nuts 1x 46mm 3/4 inch drive and breaker and a six foot scaffold bar....does it every time!! 1 x quality jack and two other wheeling supports........

 And just take it all out!!!  There is the small issue that this bus now has no rear wheels, so we will have to reconnect the reduction boxes and the swing axle tubes back in situ for transport to the blasters!!!

 Other than the fact that she has more undulations than the Yorkshire Dales this area is solid and will look brand new very soon.

 Inner air box flap is freed up and moving again - but I think that the knob is in the wrong position. Other cab details removed.

 Pedals out and gear selector.

Reshaped (whilst still leaving the patina) the spare wheel carrier so that you can!!!

I can see my bus in there!!!
